Paint the town red

Wearing ShopAkira Deep Lapel Blazer with contrast inner lining, Topshop lace cutout chiffon blouse, vintage pleated skorts, H&M oxford flats, pony hair leopard print clutch from random online shop

This red shophouse nestled in the heart of town is definitely one of my favourite places to shoot in Singapore, because the colors are just a perfect backdrop for the clothes. I wore this neutral palette outfit to my runway walk for Lowry's Farm, which explained my elaborate hair and makeup in these photos.

I really like Shop Akira Black Label's deep lapel blazer because the material is really soft and light, which is great for Singapore's weather. I can safely layer this without worrying about sweating. And the contrast inner lining in coral adds just a little pop of color to my outfit :) Shop Akira ships internationally and they stock many of my fav labels including Jeffrey Campbell, Mink Pink, Low Luv by Erin Wasson and many more cult labels. They also have their own inhouse label, which offers a wide range of amazing cutout dresses. This topshop blouse is one of my most worn item in my closet cos it's so versatile, despite it tagged a UK16. I can wear it as an outer over vintage floral print dresses, or with leather shorts and ripped tights for a more punk rock look.

Runway and backstage photos from Lowry's Farm will be up soon - do keep a lookout for that!

Downtown from Behind

I first chanced upon Bridget's photos on Instagram, where she posts beautifully composed streetstyle photos of the fashion insiders during fashion weeks, and I fell in love with them. Through some interaction with her on Instagram, I came to know of her project, Downtown From Behind. DFB aims to capture interesting people from all walks of life riding their bikes down all the streets of New York. I feel that it really reflects the many facets and layers of New York city, and also the amazing people behind the city that makes it turn. All the shots are very natural, but yet beautifully composed and lighted.

I conducted an email interview with Bridget on her project and she kindly responded:

How did you come up with the idea of photographing people from behind, riding bikes?
I spent my first summer in New York enthusiastically filming (video) friends as we rode between some of our favorite cafes, bar and bookshops.  The original concept was to create a video project, with the same idea, shot on every street below 14th.  I shot the first still image on Broadway, and fell in love with the mood, it grew from there.

What do you look for when you shoot a subject?
Each subject shot has had an impact on New York in some capacity; socially, culturally or physically in the case of an architect as example.  They represent many of the people who are helping to make New York what it is today.

Do you "stage" your photographs ie contact your subjects beforehand to inform them of the shoot and then subsequently conduct the shoot?
Every shot, with the exception of maybe three, has been organized.  I like to meet the subject before shoot day, discuss direction, what is most authentic to them, street, styling if relevant, etc.  On the day, it happens pretty naturally, and depending on the street, it can take 20 minutes or an hour.

How was the process like when you first start photographing people on bikes?
It's a relatively simple, no lights, one camera, just the subject and I.  We're focused and having a good time!

How did you pick up photography?
I had always had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember.  But I only pursued it professionally, as a career, in the last five years.

Why the move from Australia to New York? How would you compare the two countries/cities?
I love Australia, the lifestyle, landscape and food is beyond incredible. But to work in New York is a great experience, and offers creatives the opportunity to work alongside and with some of the most exciting tastemakers in the world.  It's a dynamic and demanding city, and one that encourages you to do well, and propels you forward.

What makes a good fashion image or portrait, in your opinion?
A good image should have a narrative, a reason why, and should tell a story.

What other side projects do you have currently/completed in the past besides DFB?
Downtownfrombehind has been my primary focus in the last 24 months.  My next major personal project is called 'Consumer and Brand'.  This project explores the relationship between a consumer and iconic an brand/s.  It straddles commercial and fine art photography, the first images from this series will be published later this summer.

Characteristics of a good food place: Highly inaccessible by public transport but yet packed with people flocking to eat, so much so that the waiting time period is 45 minutes long. Rider's Cafe ticks all those boxes. Set within the insides of Bukit Timah Saddle Club, it has the best brunch that I've tasted for a long time.
Me and my boyfriend didn't have a car and we trekked into the place (walked about 800m), waited for 40 minutes before our meal, which was deeply satisfying. Their eggs benedict is cooked to perfection and goes perfect with the grilled tomatoes, bacon and salad greens. The scones are hot - fresh from the oven - and is perfect paired with raspberry jam and light cream.

Food aside, I wore this lovely lace cutout maxi dress from The Scarlet Room once again because I thought that it would perfectly suit the Southern Countryside look of the saddle club and I was right. I had so much fun shooting with my boyfriend underneath this gorgeous bare tree. There's this photo of me running up the small hill backfacing the camera - that was purely a happy accident.

Here's to serendipity, and perfectly poached eggs.

On the topic of Bikinis

As you all know, the swimsuit season is in again. Without a doubt, this is a season that causes considerable stress to all ladies intending to travel overseas for that beach getaway, or just to anywhere, for the Singapore sun is so unforgiving nowadays you must be crazy to wear long sleeves or long pants.

But actually I don't get why people are all fussing over "that bikini body", because ultimately, you go on a holiday to destress and feel good about yourself, not the other way round. Why wear a bikini when you have so many other choices such as a one-piece swimsuit with strategically placed cutouts or lace inserts? Or perhaps a tankini and a boy's shorts set? Aimer, the leading luxury lingerie brand from China, has just launched a new swimsuit line and I personally think their designs are great for women looking to flaunt THEIR body, not just a perfect body.

I really like the Pure collection featuring black and white swimsuits with plenty of lace inserts and cutouts, because it is elegant yet sexy at the same time. Its one piece swimsuits also cover up muffin tops (if any) and the toga cut slims down the figure as well, for slightly more mature women. The more tropical bikini collection with its bright splash of colors suit younger girls.

Beach is also the best time for layering and accessories without looking over the top. Play with crochet slips, lace skirts, neon accessories, pastel nail colors and add those chic beach shades and you're all ready to go!

AFF 2012 Street Snaps #2

Shot on the same Saturday as the previous Part I rendition, the evening shows saw even more stylish show attendees for the shows alldressedup, Zac Posen, and finally FFN featuring Max Tan, Mae Pang and Dzojchen.

Rachel, buyer from ASOS.com
Rachel's a buyer that I met during Blueprint. She and her fellow buyer, Allie, was in town to source for new brands to bring on board ASOS. She has grasped a certain way of dressing that only certain women like Taylor Tomasi Hill is capable of - looking great in baggy clothes and in various prints and bold colors that few people can pull off.

Also spotted was this mysterious guy in a short crew cut wearing running shoes for the runway show. Kudos to him for wearing neon coral trainers and that simple, yet stylish getup.

The alldressedup show welcomed a much more stylish group than the Raoul show (with a lot of ladies in lookatme dresses). Generally the crowd wore a mix of textures, prints and bold colors with much better sartorial ability; most of the invitees were people who I have never seen on the fashion circuit.

That's all for digital snaps. The next batch of photos will come straight off from my film camera, La Sardina. Can't wait to see how they turn out...

Arm in Arm to Lowry's Farm!

My Japanese stylist friend, Fumi, invited me to be one of the blogger/models for Japanese label Lowry's Farm's store opening this saturday! Lowry's Farm is under Point Inc, a Japanese casual fashion concept multi-label store. Collect Point at Wisma Atria is Point Inc's first venture into the Singapore market and now it is set to open another one in Bugis+ (former Iluma)!

Lowry's Farm is hugely popular in Japan as it offers laidback, comfortable everyday styles for girls. Its individual separates are easy to co-ordinate and style to create elegant and clean silhouettes for ladies. Their new Spring Summer collection is brought to life with a super cute storyline of Miss Lowry's pageant contest through its editorials.

I love this season's cute retro, British inspired looks, featuring breton stripes, tweed, denim dresses and shirts and schoolgirl preppy blazers. It deviates from my usual style a little - I'm more gravitated towards tailored, sharp yet feminine pieces nowadays instead of retro or country - but looking at the separates, there are many pieces that I can easily incorporate into my wardrobe to suit my style as well!
LOWRYS FARM INVITE

So please do come and join me for an afternoon of fun this Saturday! Event is free and open to public.
See miniatures turn life-size with the ‘farm playhouse’ inspired runway, and watch me and my fellow models walking through a reverie of grass, flowers and other knickknacks.

Special things to look out for:

  • Secret tips revealed during the hair show on how to create Japanese hairstyles!
  • Special styling segment by our local fashion bloggers
  • Instant polaroid photos on our runway sets
  • Lucky draw with $500 worth of vouchers to be won!
I am able to RSVP two guests for the event, and you'd be able to get a goodie bag containing a compact, a cute brolly, vouchers from all our sponsors and more! Please leave a comment below with your name and contact and I will randomly select two guests for the event :)

AFF 2012 Street Snaps #1

I have a lesser collection of streetstyle shots on hand with me now because a large number of them are all on film this time round because of my collaboration with Lomography Singapore! Hopefully the film shots turn out right - I'm actually extremely worried because some of the rolls were kind of accidentally screwed up.

Anyway, all of these were shot on 19 May, on AFF's full lineup of shows. Enjoy!

I'm very encouraged by the number of style mavens that I spotted outside the shows this week and the best thing was that some of them were not people working within the tightknit fashion community in Singapore. Some of the people I shot were really just walking along the streets and I'm really happy and encouraged to see that. I feel that this year's AFF carried more punch - it may be because of the fact that Blueprint managed to hook up with so many international buyers that came to attend the runway shows as well.

This year's AFF also showcased much more young, emerging designers instead of the usual established names. In fact, there's only three of those this year - Mugler, Zac Posen and Roland Mouret. Speaking of which, Zac Posen was heartachingly beautiful - more on that later.

That's all for roundup #1! Check back next Friday for part II.
