10 Day Itinerary in Morrocco

Fes Morocco - kisses,vera-30 Sahara desert kisses,vera-100

It is hard for me to even know where to start writing on my 10-day itinerary in Morocco, as the time spent was simply amazing and cannot be fully encapsulated in words.

I based my travel itinerary very closely to this one from Salt in Our Hair – They are a travelling couple and I really love their travel guides.

Read more for the list of places I have visited, and you can also download them using Google Maps in the embed link below.

Day 1: Fes to Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen blue - kisses,vera-74 We flew into Fes from London and made the decision to go straight to Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl. It takes 3.5h drive to get to Chefchaouen, and it is best that you try to purchase the CTM bus ticket from Fes city – Chefchaouen online. Alternatively, take one of the private car hires from Fes airport to city center (It should cost you just 100 Dhs) and then take Grand Taxi to Chefchaouen (400-500 Dhs).

We didn’t know better originally and had no choice but to go with a private car hire that costed us (700 Dhs).

Day 2: Chefchaouen to Fes

Chefchaouen blue - kisses,vera-19 Chefchaouen blue - kisses,vera-64 Chefchaouen is a small mountain town that makes it enough to cover in 1 day – Its beauty is in its houses which are all painted in varying shades of blue.

See: Spanish Mosque – Ask locals for the way to the waterfall, then follow the path to hike up to the Spanish Mosque, which is located at a high vantage point for you to get a bird’s eye view of the Chefchaouen. Perfect for sunset too!

Stay: Casa Perleta – We had a cosy one night stay at this riad, which featured a cosy courtyard and bedrooms with Moroccan elements. Breakfast was fantastic and served on the roof terrace.

Day 3 & 4: Fes

Fes Morocco - kisses,vera-50 Fes Morocco - kisses,vera-63 Fes Morocco - kisses,vera-17 We spent two nights in Fes, which I thought were just nice to visit all the Medersas and the various souks in Fes. Fes is known as the cultural capital in Morocco, since it houses the world’s oldest university, Al Quaraouiyine and has 14 medersas (religious schools). It is also known for handicraft and leather tanning, and you can see all of that in the souks.

See more of Fes here.

Fes Morocco - kisses,vera-37 Stay: Riad Anata – We stayed a total of 3 nights at this lovely riad which was located just around 8 minutes away from the craziness of the central medina. The riad is very thoughtfully decorated while retaining modern amenities such as a rain shower, air-con and humidifier. I especially love the rooftop terrace, which features day loungebeds, and also a macramé hammock over a dipping pool.

Day 5 – 7: 3D2N Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech

We went for a 3D2N desert tour from Fes to Marrakech, booked with Morocco Excursions. There are a lot of companies offering 3D2N tours, and the tour itinerary is pretty standard driving from Fes to Merzouga desert, then second day to Dades Gorge, and finally to Marrakech, and along the way you will see amazing views of Morocco and visit some amazing sights in the valleys.

We absolutely recommend this tour as it allows you to see more of Morocco and its beautiful landscapes, and also to interact with its people.

Day 8 & 9: Marrakech

Marrakech - kisses,vera-73 Marrakech - kisses,vera-4 Marrakech is a bit of a beautiful mess – its roads and medina are very busy and chaotic, and at times the locals can appear intimidating to tourists, especially at night. However, we didn’t let that deter us, and still had fun exploring the sights and smells of the city.

There are a few fusion restaurants in town there are very good and highly recommended!

Riad Star x kissesvera 5 Stay: Riad Star – We stayed for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the quiet and peace of the riad, and especially its interiors! Riad Star is modelled after the former residence of Jazz Age star Josephine Baker, and its décor features Moroccan influences with 1920s Art Deco style.

Tips & Tricks

Haggling
Do not name the price first. After the vendor has named a price, quote him 1/3 of the price he has named. Do not budge from that price unless to add 10-20Dhs. If you’re not interested in the item, don’t ask for the price for fun.

Buying Carpets

Purchase carpets from authorized co-operatives, which work with village Berber women to sell the carpets. Their carpets are authentic and of good quality. Prices are negotiable – You can still quote 1/3, but be prepared to pay a bit more.

Currency Exchange

Dirhams is a locked currency, ie it cannot be used elsewhere. Towards the end of your trip, you can pay in Euros if needed, especially in Marrakech.

Scams

Don’t fall for any scams! Common ones include taking a photo of you/ if you take a photo of them or some animal, they will force you to pay money. Don’t let any of the kids lead you the way – there will be a lot of boys in Marrakech claiming to lead you the way – Don’t listen to them, it’s better to ask from old shopkeepers.

Cover Up!

Morocco is still a Muslim country; respect them and don’t show too much skin! Maxi dresses and skirts would be very useful there. Pack a scarf – it will come in very handy too!
